About our Chapter & History

The Vermont State University – Lyndon Chapter of the American Meteorological Society and National Weather Association (VTSU-Lyndon AMS & NWA) was founded in 1971 at Belknap College. The club then moved to its new home in Lyndonville, Vermont located in the Northeast Kingdom with the Meteorology department when Belknap College closed. Centered around the nationally acclaimed Atmospheric Sciences program at VTSU-Lyndon (formally Lyndon State College), our club not only promotes education in science, but also demonstrates strong ties to the college, community, and surrounding towns near VTSU-Lyndon.

The VTSU-Lyndon AMS & NWA is one of the largest and most active clubs on the Vermont State University – Lyndon campus. Year-round, the club is constantly organizing fundraisers and events that promote participation from the student body and community as well as special events for our own members. Our biggest event is the Northeastern Storm Conference (NESC) which is one of the largest and longest lasting student-run conferences of its kind held annually.

The VTSU-Lyndon AMS & NWA has shown great promise and success in its previous years and always strives to make each year better than the last. For this strive and dedication, the club has received the Local Student Chapter of the Year Award from the National AMS five times (1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2004-2005, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022). Our chapter also received the National Weather Service Certificate of Recognition in 2000 for “outstanding contributions in promoting exchange of atmospheric and hydrological knowledge throughout the Northeast United States.”
